The management of course content in Moodle itself is not typically considered best practice in a large and complex Learning Management System (LMS). The TVC Alfresco Learning Content Management System (LCMS) acts as a library of course content:
- Only one current copy need be kept in the LCMS but it can be used by multiple course managers, instead of proliferating multiple copies in the LMS.
- Content across all courses stored in the LCMS can be searched in a single operation, as opposed to siloing of content that can only be searched within a particular user or course context.
- Content stored in the LCMS is subject to version control and history.
- LCMS-backed content can be managed and updated centrally with the latest version appearing in courses.
- Content and content versions are backed up, independent of the LMS backups. Content deleted from a course can easily be retrieved from the LCMS.
- It can help to maintain a more efficient LMS by keeping copies and versions of files in the LCMS instead of the LMS.
- LMS backups are faster and in the unlikely event that restoration is required, this is faster
- Copyright and usage recording and management can be controlled
- Video and other media can be streamed from the LCMS
- Content does not get “archived” or “lost” when a course goes away and its author leaves an organisation.
